ENERGEX, Earth Hour and AFL

After reading Geoff Zeiss' post about IESO in Ontario monitoring the drop in that city's demand for electricity during tonight's Earth Hour I wanted to check whether ENERGEX in Brisbane would be offering similar service.

I was very pleased to find that they are: http://www.energex.com.au/community/community_earth_hour.html

Unfortunately, while my house will be using no electricity during Earth Hour for the second year running, I will be watching the Brisbane Lions play the West Coast Eagles at the Gabba under blaring lights. I sincerely hope that the Australian Football League (AFL), Brisbane Lions, West Coast Eagles and the Gabba management all put Earth Hour into their calendar and not commit such a faux pas in 2010.

Note: I have since read that the AFL is offsetting during Earth Hour which partially redeems them in my eyes. However, I still think not scheduling a game under lights on the night of Earth Hour would be much more in the spirit of the event.

After the recent Eagles-Port Adelaide game in Perth, someone called the ABC sports team and asked them why the lights were switched on at 4pm when vision was good and the game was more than half over. The reason, apparently, is that it makes better vision for TV - the players and spectators don't need them on. Needless to say, the sports commentators had no comment on this. It appears the AFL is not very "green."
